About MRC/UVRI:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. The Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute (MRC/UVRI) Uganda Research Unit on AIDS based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Entebbe is a bilateral multi-disciplinary research organisation funded by the Medical Research Council (UK), DFID (UK) and other donor organisations.
Job Summary: The Communications and Engagement Officer will mainly be responsible for the management of all aspects of communications and community engagement across the MRC unit, and specifically support information flow within the unit, but also with the relevant stake holders and general public.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Steers the development, implementation, and evaluation of major national or international communications, projects and strategies for the lay and professional audiences, including innovative demonstration project.
  • Manages and guides development, testing and timely dissemination of science and audience- based products, tools and message to different audiences (i.e. general public, external organization, partners, and media) in a variety of formats (i.e. print, video, Web).
  • Offers expert consultation and technical expertise in the creation of strategic and integrated plans and strategies for communication programs, campaigns and activities.
  • Takes charge of research and evaluation activities related to research communication. Promotes, guides, conducts, and supports audience research and evaluation of communication programs, including formative, process, and outcome evaluation and qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Works in liaison with management to ensure that the organization’s strategic plan, mission, vision and values are integrated into all the communications for project’s strategies, goals, objectives, work plans and work products, and services. He/she will manage and all communications in the unit
  • Serves as a key focal contact liaison between MRC and other partners on organisation-wide issues and networks with a variety of external stakeholders (e.g. UNHRO, Ministry of health, UNCST and local agencies, officials of other countries and international organizations, communication experts, and representatives of the general public).
  • Processes all internal publication needs of the unit in liaison with the concerned parties.
  • Guarantees that the organisational website has accurate and relevant information and is updated in a timely manner.
  • Routinely trains Unit personnel in communication skills on identifying their gaps.
  • Develops, coordinates the implementation and monitoring of the Unit’s community development activities.
  • Identifies potential collaborators to engage in shared local community engagement activities.
  • Works in consultation with Programme Heads and the Directors to keep a financial oversight of communications activities under their leadership, ensuring that expenditure is within the budget limits.
  • Assists the Programme Heads and Directors at national and international meetings as and when requested.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The suitable candidate should hold a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Masters in the same field will be an added advantage.
  • Three or more years’ experience in a communications role. 
  • Communication experience in a research organisation will be an added advantage.
  • Previous experience ideally in a Public Health or HIV AIDS communication role is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of Media and Community Engagement programmes is an added advantage

IWRM is a process which promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources in order to maximise economic and social welfare without compromising the sustainability of ecosystems and the environment.
Job Summary: The Development Communications Officer will work with a team of other professionals in the programme that includes other disciplines based at the Sub-region. The coordinating office of the GWP EnA is located in Entebbe, Uganda hosted by the Nile Basin Initiative Secretariat.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: The Development Communications Officer will be working together with other officers of GWP to promote public and media awareness of and involvement in the GWP EnA and to mobilize among the member Countries confidence and trust on the programme. The officer will do this by:
  • Developing and implementing, the programmme communication strategy as part of communications strategy of GWP which encompasses external, internal and programmes’ communications;
  • Designing, managing and facilitating the implementation of the GWP programmes and Projects’ communications work plan - including monitoring and reporting duties associated with that work plan; and
  • Developing and managing a strategy for the production and dissemination of a wide array of public information products – including publications, writing and editing of public information materials, reports, brochures, new letters and information briefs/progress updates.
 Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The Communications Officer must hold a master's degree in Communication, Media Relations or Journalism
  • The applicant should possess at least five years’ experience in designing Development communication strategies in regional or international organizations.
  • State-of-the-art knowledge in field of communications and public affairs, and ability to address a range of issues related to the GWP EnA business and development programs.
  • Significant and diverse experience in all facets of communications and public  affairs, and proven ability to conceptualize, design and implement major campaigns, strategies or programs.
  • Possess excellent analytical and writing skills.
  • Ability to effectively assist GWP EnA management to assess the political climate for achieving their underlying objectives (e.g., development assistance, resource mobilization, policy advocacy, confidence building, etc.), and enhance their operational effectiveness in dealing with external constituencies.
  • Demonstrated political awareness and ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with target audiences and to otherwise cultivate effective, productive client relationships and partnerships.
  • Sound knowledge of disciplines relevant to GWP EnA’s work (e.g., economics, water resources management, social development, or other relevant field).
  • Detailed knowledge of national/international trends, political-economic issues, and conditions and developments related to GWP EnA countries.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; proven experience in working as both a leader and a member of a team.
  • Highly developed oral and written communications skills and ability to persuasively present and defend controversial issues/positions.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English with a working knowledge of French OR

About Project:
This project offers motivated interns the opportunity to gain hands-on micro-credit and business training experience to kick-start a career in international development. The organisation you will be working for was set up over two years with the aim of encouraging growth in rural communities. Micro business loans are given to single mothers or widows to start income-generating businesses, which helps them rise out of poverty and create positive living conditions for themselves and their families.

The project finds community members who are not working, trains them in basic business management skills and gives them micro-loans to start a business of their choice. The members are put in a group of six who are meant to support each other in finding solutions to the challenges facing their businesses. For the cooperative business projects the members are encouraged to work as a group towards the creation of one product or service, such as a cooperative bakery.

Since its inception the project has assisted over fifteen individual female-led rural households. In addition, over twenty households have benefited from a co-operative piggery project. The organisation is currently working on a 30 member co-operative solar bakery project that will be located on an isolated island in Lake Victoria. This is an ambitious and growing project and your contribution can help make a tangible difference in poor communities.

Job Summary: The Intern will be tasked to work with our local staff to hold meetings with the micro-loan members, visit and assess progress of their businesses, and discuss business challenges and solutions. In addition, he/she will assist in the identification of skills which may be required for the better running of their businesses, assess other women's groups that may benefit from the project, and raise awareness of the projects aims.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • The Intern will be assisting in programmes that provide credit assistance for self-help savings, sound banking policies for the poor, and revolving funds for those in need.
    He /she will also be coordinating meetings and training sessions for NGOs which assist poor communities to build up savings, credit and form linkages with banks.
  • Offering support to village self-help groups to independently develop financial institutions to manage profit-making programs and activities.
  • The Intern will be creating workshops to introduce the concept of micro-credits and micro-finance to new communities.
  • Elaborating business plans and facilitate access to micro-credit by working with local communities.
  • Offering administrative support.
You will also get to share your time with the HIV/AIDS education project. This involves educating the women about the various ways of preventing the spread of HIV, mobilising them for HIV testing, giving out free condoms and encouraging them to pass the information on to their male family members and partners.

You will be met at Entebbe international airport in Kampala by a project representative and taken to the project location to begin your placement, after a full orientation to Kampala.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  The applicant should exhibit high enthusiasm and interest in working in the micro finance sector
You will stay in accommodations near to the project, which you will share with other participants during your stay.
You will have access to a fully equipped kitchen and clean bathroom.

About UVRI-IAVI:

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Plan and implement data management procedures and programs as well as data quality control systems for all research studies and service programs.
Design data entry screens and data analysis programs including relational databases for longitudinal studies.
Conduct statistical data analyses and participate in writing manuscripts, reports, and grant proposals
Ensure proper storage, archival and security of all data and data collections forms.
Supervise and train staff in the Statistics and Data Management Unit in data management and quality control.
Train technical research staff on analysis of data.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
All candidates should hold Bachelors' degrees in Statistics with a Masters degree in Biostatistics/Statistics or Demography (with concentration in Biostatistics).
At least five years post graduate experience in Biostatistics and Data Management in a Health Research Organization spanning cohort studies and clinical trials that involves linkage of participants' data across survey rounds.
Hands-on skills in data management, analysis and programming as well as supervision of subordinate staff are a must.
Proficiency in Stata and Visual FoxPro are required.
Knowledge of other software programs is an added advantage.

Education and Qualifications:
• At least a diploma in food science technology/ public health or food safety qualification
• Previous experience in agrifood industry is mandatory

• Knowledge of ISO 9001, and/or 22000 standards would be much appreciated

The UNOPS Development Group Cluster is based in the North America Office and supports a diverse and complex portfolio including partners such as the United Nations Development Programme (the Bureau for Development Policy, the Human Development Report Office, and the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation), the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations Capital Development Fund, the United Nations Secretariat and a broadening community of primarily New York-based UN partners in the delivery of project management, implementation and administration services. The United Nations Department of Field Support, Information andCommunications Technology Division (UN DFS-ICTD) is responsible for thedelivery of applications that satisfy the requirements of the Departments ofPeacekeeping Operations and Field Support (DPKO/DFS) missions as well asSpecial Political Missions (SPMs).
DFS has implemented a range of systems to address the principalrequirements of peacekeeping operations and to support and enhance theprocesses DFS undertakes.
UNOPS has been requested to assist in the implementation of this activity.
Functional ResponsibilitiesUnder the supervision of the Data Management Lead in Entebbe, the Business / Data Analyst will perform the following:
  • Understand and optimize existing systems and propose and plan customized solutions as per clients' need.
  • List technical requirements for software improvements and design system flows based on current situation and on analyzed needs.
  • Interact with stakeholders (local, regional and HQ) to understand and document their requirements and model future business or operational processes and design related systems.
  • Rationalize systems and documents, design optimized data streams to enable data warehousing and work on to secure confidential and strategic data.
  • Maintain and enhance existing reports and conceive new business intelligence reporting suite to facilitate strategic decisions
  • Help RBI team to c.reate tactical dashboards and scorecards and document innovative solutions (flowchart, design document, data model, risk analysis and mitigation) that will match DPKO/DFS current and future Network Communication's governance
  • Realize and maintain software solutions and reporting suite and perform system testing and assist User Acceptance Tests.
  • Coordinate new solutions' deployments, conduct lessons learnt and write user guides related to new solutions.
  • Work on projects to better improve Data Integration in DW environment.
  • Write SQL queries for data profiling, data validation and testing activities.
  • Perform other data integration and admin related work (as needed).
Competencies
Professionalism - Strong theoretical background and knowledge of information technology/information management best practice implementation in the field of reporting and business intelligence and data integration. Strong analytical, problem solving, writing and negotiation skills, including familiarity with software development lifecycle and the implementation and support of complex information ICT systems and projects.
Client Orientation: Ability to identify and analyze clients' needs and develop appropriate technological solutions to the business needs. Experience in working with contracted service providers in a globally dispersed environment.
Planning and Organizing: Ability to organize, plan and implement work assignments, juggle competing demands and work under pressure of frequent and tight deadlines. Ability to lead a project team to completion and provide technical guidance to staff.
Communications: Proven ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate effectively orally. Ability to effectively prepare specifications and other written reports/documentation in a clear and concise style. Ability to communicate with various levels of technical experience (developers/ operations/ end users/ management / support staff). Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with a level of professionalism and integrity.
Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity, including gender balance.
Education/Experience/Language requirementsEducation: Advanced University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in social sciences, information technology, computer sciences or in field related to the post description. A first level university degree with a combination of relevant academic qualifications and extensive experience in information systems may be accepted in lieu of an advance university degree. Experience:
  • At least 5 years practical experience as a Business Analyst and/or Data Analyst on transactional, reporting and DW/BI application.
  • Excellent Project Management skills and strong experience of SDLC and best-practice processes Basic experience as Analyst Programmer (ASP.NET, SQL development, Data Integration)
  • Strong skills on MS Office, MS Visio and MS Project Server
  • Experience in a Reporting, Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing environment
  • Good experience with creation of reports and creation of dashboards and scorecards
  • Knowledgeable on Business Intelligence reporting, data reconciliation and data warehousing
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills; able to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including mid level manager of the organization
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Able to work with multiple technical and business groups in a large globally based organization
  • Proven ability to establish and develop relationships with all key stakeholders to facilitate a truly collaborative approach, identify potential conflicts and deliver consensus solutions in support of business strategies.
Language: Fluency in English required.
